It is a progressive condition that affects the macula, which is the small central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Types of Macular Degeneration

There are two types of macular degeneration: dry and wet.

Dry Macular Degeneration

Dry macular degeneration is the most common form, accounting for around 80% of all cases. It occurs when the light-sensitive cells in the macula gradually break down and thin out, leading to a loss of central vision.

Wet Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration is less common, but it is more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak blood and fluid, causing damage to the macula and leading to a rapid loss of central vision.

Preventing Macular Degeneration

While there is no cure for macular degeneration, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk of developing the condition.

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in vitamins C and E, zinc, and beta-carotene, can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight or obese can increase your risk of developing macular degeneration. Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight is essential.

3. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise, such as walking or swimming, can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

4. Quit Smoking

Smoking is a major risk factor for macular degeneration. If you smoke, quitting is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk.

5. Protect Your Eyes from UV Light

UV light can damage the eyes, increasing the risk of macular degeneration. Therefore, wearing sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays can help protect your eyes.

6. Get Regular Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are essential for detecting macular degeneration early and preventing vision loss. Your eye doctor can perform various tests to assess the health of your eyes and detect any signs of macular degeneration.


Macular degeneration is a progressive condition that can lead to severe vision loss. While there is no cure, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk of developing the condition. By eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, protecting your eyes from UV light, and getting regular eye exams, you can help prevent macular degeneration and preserve your vision.
